The current composition of the 48th Parliament of Australia

The current composition of the Australian Parliament as of 05/06/2025.

House of Representatives

There are 150 seats in the lower house (House of Representatives) and a party requires 76 seats to govern in its own right.

The representation of parties in the Parliament is as follows:

The Speaker

The Australian Labor Party has re-elected the Hon. Milton Dick MP, to be re-appointed as Speaker. The election of the Speaker and other parliamentary office holders will take place on the first sitting day of the new parliament on July 22, 2025. By convention the Speaker does not participate in votes on the floor of the House other than to break a tie. Convention usually requires the Speaker to cast their vote to preserve the status quo.

Senators from the states are elected for a term of 6 years. Senators from the territories are elected for a term of 3 years. In the 2025 the Coalition has lost five seats. Labor won three seats in Queensland, South Australia and Victoria. One Nation gained two seats in NSW and Western Australia.

The final 2025 election outcome resulted in the Australian Labor Party holding 28 Senate seats and the Australian Greens 11. The numbers above include the following changes to the party totals.
