Minesterial Responsibilities for WA Cabinet
WA Premier, Alan Carpenter, today announced detail of new Ministerial responsibilities within his Cabinet.
This follows Tony McRae, MLA Member for Riverton being sworn in this morning as Minister for Disability Services; Citizenship and Multicultural Interests and Assisting the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure.
Tony McRae was elected by the Labor Caucus last Monday to replace the former Police and Justice Minister John D’Orazio.
Mr McRae was elected as the Member for Riverton in 2001, defeating Graham Kierath, a former Court government minister on industrial relations. In 2005, he was elected Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture and Forestry; the Mid West and Wheatbelt. In 2006, he took on the additional responsibilities of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Resources and Assisting the Minister for State Development; Employment Protection.
Additional Parliamentary activities undertaken by Mr McRae include:
Acting Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2000; Chair of a major review of the training system in Western Australia; Member of the Public Accounts Committee since 2005; Chair of the Local Impacts Committee which oversaw a range of reforms to the metropolitan freight network.
Mr McRae worked as an electrician in the Pilbara. In 1985 he was appointed as industrial relations and training adviser to Minister and Premier Peter Dowding until 1991. From 1996 to 2000, Mr McRae was Director, Research and Information for the National Native Title Tribunal.
Prior to entering politics, Mr McRae worked as an economic development consultant.
Key changes to the Cabinet include:
John Kobelke will assume responsibility for Police and Emergency Services; Community Safety. He retains the portfolios of Water Resources; and Sport and Recreation.
Margaret Quirk will have responsibility for the renamed Corrective Services portfolio (formerly Justice) and retains the portfolios of Women’s Interests; and Assisting the Minister for Federal Affairs.
The former portfolio of Justice has been renamed as Corrective Services to reflect the core functions of the department.
David Templeman will retain responsibility for Community Development; Seniors and Volunteering; and Youth. He was previously responsible for Assisting the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure.
