Introduction of the New Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Legislation
A suite of legislation relating to the establishment of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) was introduced into Parliament today (14 May 2009). Upon the introduction of these bills, certain provisions (those that the Economics Committee Report of 16 April 2009 did not consider) will be referred to the Economics Legislation Committee for inquiry and report by 15 June 2009.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change, the Hon. Greg Combet, delivered the second reading speeches and noted that “it is important that the bills to enact the Scheme be passed this year – both to maximise the chances of a global deal at Copenhagen in December and to provide business with certainty.”
