Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission
For the last two decades there have been calls to establish an independent national regulator for the charities sector. The 2011-12 Federal Budget provided $53.6 million to establish the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC). The ACNC will report to the Treasurer. More information on the ACNC is available here.
The ACNC is located in Canberra. To date, four roundtables have been organised with stakeholders to consider policy issues on (1) financial reporting and (2) information, (3) governance, and (4) education.
The ACNC is preparing a Discussion Paper summarising the key themes identified through the Roundtable process; this is due for release on 30 November. There will be a two week public consultation period in early February 2012 and submissions to the ACNC on matters identified in the Discussion Paper can be submitted up until 27 February 2012.
