Digital Platform Regulators Forum: Immersive Technologies Working Paper

On Wednesday 24 September, the Digital Platform Regulators Forum (DP-REG) published a working paper on immersive technologies.

Immersive technologies are those which enable users to experience and interact in three dimensions with digital content and includes technologies such as virtual reality, mixed reality, augmented reality and haptics.

The working paper acknowledges the opportunities immersive technologies present for people and businesses across a range of industries, from students learning history by walking ancient streets to surgeons simulating complex procedures. However, it also acknowledges the limits of such technologies and the potential risks and harms that come with it. Some of the risks and harms examined by DP-REG include the collection, use and disclosure of personal and sensitive information of individuals, as well as scams, online gambling and harms related to online safety. 

The working paper considers the potential impacts of immersive technologies across the regulatory remits of members of DP-REG, including risks to privacy, consumer protection, competition, media and the information environment, and online safety.  It also examines recent and ongoing developments in Australia and internationally in understanding and regulating such technologies.

Digital Platform Regulators Forum Background

DP-REG is made up of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the eSafety Commissioner (eSafety), and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC). In 2022, each of the four members formalised existing collaborative arrangements to form DP-REG. Through the forum members share information about, and collaborate on, cross-cutting issues and activities involving the regulation of digital platforms. This includes consideration of how competition, consumer protection, privacy, online safety and data issues intersect.
